Twenty one workers sustained burn injuries in an explosion at a wood factory in the southern province of Dong Nai Tuesday.

Witnesses said the explosion occurred at the factory’s sawdust storeroom at around 2.30 p.m., when some 200 workers were working.

It shook the 9,700-square-meter plant in Thien Tan Commune, Vinh Cuu District, run by Duc Tam Company, and a fire broke out soon afterwards, they said.

The workers fled in panic, but some of them were injured and taken to the Thong Nhat General Hospital in nearby Bien Hoa town.

Two fire trucks and 40 firefighters arrived and took more than two hours to put out the blaze.

According to preliminary information, 30 minutes before the explosion some workers found a small fire in the sawdust storeroom. They used water and fire extinguishers to put it out.

Dr. Nguyen The Thac of the Thong Nhat Hospital told Thanh Nien that 15 of the victims in critical condition were sent to Ho Chi Minh City's Cho Ray Hospital the same day.
